6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Artificial Intelligence is making headlines on a daily basis. And those headlines are not always positive. Even tech leaders and experts are warning of the potential dangers of AI from the development and use of autonomous lethal weapons to turbo charging mis-and-disinformation that undermine democracy. But AI also has the potential for enormous good. It's powerful tools who drive forward the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals by making a massive leap in health care, and eradicating diseases that affect millions by transforming education and empowering people everywhere to build a better future. The AI for good global summit convened by ITU recognizes the joint responsibility of governments, the private sector, United Nations agencies, academia and others to ensure AI reaches its full potential while preventing and mitigating harms. AI must benefit everyone, including the one third of humanity is still offline. Human rights, transparency and accountability must light the way. We must urgently find consensus around the essential guardrails to govern the development and deployment of AI for the good of all. I look to the AI for Good Summit to continue to explore practical applications of AI that can advance the Sustainable Development Goals. These applications will complement the work of the high level advisory body on AI that I am planning to establish, as well as the global digital compact and preparations for the summit of the future next year. Together. Let's spare no effort to harness the power of AI for good thank you.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General:

“Good morning, everyone and welcome to the AI for Good Global Summit. You heard the words of the Secretary General very clearly, it is our joint responsibility. It's our joint responsibility and he counts on us all to ensure that AI reaches its full potential while preventing and mitigating harms. We're running out of time. Almost eight years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs are off track. Poverty and hunger are on the rise and we're faced with the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss that has pushed humanity to the brink. Ladies and gentlemen, that's the choice before us. What are you going to choose? I choose the scenario where AI lives up to its promise. Are you with me? Will you stand for digital equality? Will you stand for the SDGs? Will you stand for AI for good? The era of generative AI is just beginning and the future of AI has yet to be written. So together, let's make it innovative. Let's make it safe. And let's make it responsible for all. Thank you very much.”

STORYLINE:

Leaders in government, the private sector, academia, civil society, and the United Nations gathered at the AI for Good Global Summit convened by ITU – the first event of its kind since generative artificial intelligence shocked the world a few months ago. It comes at a time of growing calls for AI governance and regulation.

In a video message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “Artificial Intelligence is making headlines on a daily basis. And those headlines are not always positive. Even tech leaders and experts are warning of the potential dangers of AI from the development and use of autonomous lethal weapons to turbo charging mis-and-disinformation that undermine democracy.”

However, Guterres said, “AI also has the potential for enormous good. It's powerful tools who drive forward the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals by making a massive leap in health care, and eradicating diseases that affect millions by transforming education and empowering people everywhere to build a better future.”

He continued, “The AI for Good Global Summit convened by ITU recognizes the joint responsibility of governments, the private sector, United Nations agencies, academia and others to ensure AI reaches its full potential while preventing and mitigating harms.”

The UN chief reiterateid, “AI must benefit everyone, including the one third of humanity is still offline. Human rights, transparency and accountability must light the way. We must urgently find consensus around the essential guardrails to govern the development and deployment of AI for the good of all.”

He said that he looks to the AI for Good Summit to “continue to explore practical applications of AI that can advance the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Guterres conclude, “These applications will complement the work of the high level advisory body on AI that I am planning to establish, as well as the global digital compact and preparations for the summit of the future next year. Together. Let's spare no effort to harness the power of AI for good.”

In her keynote speech, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General said, “We're running out of time. Almost eight years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs are off track. Poverty and hunger are on the rise and we're faced with the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss that has pushed humanity to the brink.”

Bogdan-Martin continued, “that's the choice before us.

AI for Good is organized by ITU, the UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies, together with 40 partner UN agencies. The summit is co-convened by the government of Switzerland.

ITU's global membership includes 193 Member States and – uniquely in the UN system – over 900 companies, universities, and international and regional organizations.

Member States at ITU's governing Plenipotentiary Conference in 2022 adopted a resolution supporting the tech agency's work across the UN system to realize the benefits of AI for sustainable development.
