There were massacres and so as they fled, they sometimes unfortunately had to leave behind little children who couldn't run, people who were injured and the elderly. Of course, we told them that we're here with the humanitarian community to try and help them live better here in Chad. We've got the WFP with us, we've got lots of NGOs, and we're going to try and help the government deal with this humanitarian crisis. We're talking about 15,000 refugees who arrived in the space of 48 hours, but again, we're not sure, we're just starting to count.”

STORYLINE:

Thousands of people continue to flee escalating violence in Sudan's West Darfur region as deadly clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rages on in Sudan.

Over 115,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Chad in search for safety and protection since the beginning of the crisis in April, UNHCR is working closely with governments and partners in all countries neighbouring Sudan to respond to those who have arrived and prepare for more new arrivals. The security situation has gotten worse as fighting has reportedly continued despite ceasefires.

Sudan, which has a long record of generously hosting refugees, used to be home to over 1 million refugees - the second highest refugee population in Africa - mainly from South Sudan, Eritrea, Syria, and Ethiopia, as well as the Central African Republic, Chad and Yemen.

The current fighting has already displaced over 800,000 people inside Sudan. In addition, over 220,000 refugees and refugee returnees have left Sudan. Various organizations, including UNHCR, IRC, LMI, WHO, UNICEF, WFP and others, are actively involved in providing health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Medical consultations are being conducted in arrival sites through the use of mobile clinics. Health workers are also attending to refugees arriving with injuries and gunshot wounds after being attacked by armed militia. Children have been screened for malnutrition, and the national polio vaccination campaign has started. A measles vaccination campaign also started in Borota, Ouaddai province. In the Ouaddai province health services are being strengthened and cholera prevention activities have been carried out.
