STORYLINE:
Over 13,000 people have arrived in Am-Dafock in the Central African Republic to escape conflict at home. Majority of new arrivals are women and children from Nyala who say they faced several difficulties on the way to Am Dafock, such as threats by armed men, extortion of goods, physical aggression and sexual violence.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have been distributing core relief items, water and food to new arrivals. Biometric registration also began last month and continues as more people cross the border into Chad.
UNHCR and its partners are supporting the government’s efforts to provide a protection response focused on the urgent needs of Sudanese refugees arriving in Am-Dafock and on the needs of Central African refugees returning home. Emergency teams are identifying and referring people with specific needs for protection, counseling or medical assistance.
Several emergency missions have taken place despite challenges in reaching the area, due to its remoteness and the fragile security situation.
Over 36 households have been relocated to a safer site where families can easily access services. Priority for relocations is being given to biometrically registered refugees and to the most vulnerable.
Construction works for more family shelters, latrines and showers are ongoing.
