Lazzarini said that "the uniqueness in this organization is that we are the only one who are tasked to provide government like services."
He explained, “In reality, we are de facto the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Primary Health, the Ministry of Social Services, the Ministry of Municipal services to one of the most destitute communities in the region.”
Lazzarini continued, “So, when we talk about, you know, adapting spendings to resources, I am in no position to say… well, because we have 20 percent less resources let’s ask 20 percent of our children to get out of the school.”
The Commissioner-General stressed that based on “the best available information from all our donor base”, the agency “will have no funds and cash available as from September to keep our schools, health centers and other critical services running.”
Speaking about the decreasing support, the Commissioner-General confirmed, “there have been, indeed, indications that donors have to decrease their overseas overall budgets that not necessarily targeting UNRWA.”
He continued, “You mentioned the US PRM [The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration] has informed that the UN agencies and partners that the budget is reduced. And this would also impact the agency.”

The Pledging Conference will be held tomorrow on Friday (2 Jun) New York. The conference aims to increase support from Member states to UNRWA including on finding ways and tools to overcome the Agency’s chronic financial crisis.
