2. SOUNDBITE (English) Axel Bisschop, UNHCR Representative Khartoum, Sudan:
“We are at Gallabat border crossing. This is the border crossing between Sudan and Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is on the other side. We have spoken to the immigration officials and they are telling us that now it is more orderly than it was just after the outbreak of the fighting in Khartoum. As you will see there is an IOM bus on the other side, UNHCR, IOM, WFP and many of the other agencies are there taking care of the refugees when they come across. Most of the people are actually third country nationals, but we also have Sudanese, and we have Ethiopians, who are going back. We hope that while we are arranging with the authorities here, that the situation will calm down as much as possible.”

STORYLINE:

With the conflict in Sudan entering its second month, the United Nations and its partners today (17 May) called for US$3 billion to help millions of people in the country and hundreds of thousands fleeing to neighbouring countries.

The Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan has been revised due to the soaring needs spurred by the current crisis. It now requires $2.56 billion, an increase of $800 million from just a few months ago, to help 18 million people until the end of this year, making it the largest appeal ever issued for Sudan.

The Sudan Regional refugee response plan seeks $470.4 million to support refugees, returnees and host communities in the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The funds are intended to help over 1 million people, including refugees, returnees and third country nationals.

In Ethiopia, over 20,400 People have arrived in Metema, in the Amhara region according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

UNHCR and the Refugee and Returnee Service (RRS) is distributing Core Relief Items such as blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, laundry soaps, buckets and jerricans to refugees and asylum-seekers.

At the Metema transit center 445 refugees and asylum-seekers (227 families) were recently relocated to the transit site Gorfu Tarara, some 6 km from the Metema border point.

Authorities and RRS are considering the establishment of a permanent site for refugees and asylum seekers in Kumera (West Gondar zone, Amhara region).

The most recent fighting has already displaced more than 840,000 people inside Sudan. Over 220,000 refugees and refugee returnees have fled the country, with many Sudanese escaping to Chad and Egypt, and South Sudanese refugees returning home in adverse conditions. Without an urgent resolution, many more will be forced to flee in search of safety and basic assistance.

The Refugee Response Plan will help host countries to coordinate the response with a “whole-of-society” approach in support of host governments and communities. It outlines the multi sector strategy and financial requirements of 140 partners to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to those who have been forced to flee across borders.
