STORYLINE:

Hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing fighting in Sudan to Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic. In Egypt, aid is being delivered by the UN and distributed by the Egyptian Red Crescent to those who arrive, including water, hygiene and sanitary kits, latrines wheelchairs, food and medical assistance. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has been coordinating contingency planning with partners for new arrivals (refugees, returning refugees and others) to these countries and estimates that 860,000 will flee Sudan. UNHCR estimates that 860,000 will flee Sudan.

The figure is a preliminary projection for financial and operational planning. Of the total, some 580,000 would be Sudanese, 235,000 refugees previously hosted by Sudan returning home in adverse conditions, and 45,000 refugees of other nationalities previously hosted by Sudan.

Egypt and South Sudan are expected to see most arrivals. The current fighting has already displaced over 330,000 people inside Sudan with over 100,000 refugees and returnees leaving Sudan. Continued fighting, looting, rising costs and lack of transport are making it difficult for people to leave dangerous areas. Access to health care has also been critically impacted.

The plan will support host countries to ensure access to asylum for those needing international protection, support host countries to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and identify the most vulnerable and provide specialized services. The arrival of the rainy season will further challenge access and delivery of aid to remote locations.

Most of the countries receiving those fleeing Sudan, and Sudan itself, are operations which already face a perennial underfunded situation and host large numbers of forcibly displaced people.

UNHCR has also been visiting the borders, and meeting with refugees there and in urban areas, counselling and trying to assess their needs and concerns. UNHCR has been registering refugees approaching our offices in Cairo as well.
