The UN Security Council condemned on Thursday (27 Apr) a Taliban administration ban on Afghan women working for the United Nations and called on Taliban leaders to "swiftly reverse" a crackdown on the rights of women and girls.
The resolution was drafted by the United Arab Emirates and Japan and was approved unanimously.
The Permanent Representative from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, said her country was “pleased to be joined by over 90 states co-sponsoring the resolution not just from the Security Council, but from Afghanistan's immediate neighbors, from the Muslim world and from all corners of the earth.”
Nusseibeh added, “This cross regional support makes our fundamental message today even more significant. The world will not sit by side of me as women in Afghanistan are erased from society.”
On his turn, Kimihiro Ishikane, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN, said that “the full equal meaningful and safe participation of women and girls is indispensable if Afghanistan is to have a peaceful and prosperous future and they enjoy long term development today.”
Representing the United States, Deputy Permanent Representative Robert A. Wood, said his country “would like to acknowledge the extraordinary courage of women and girls in Afghanistan.”
