In an interview today (6 Apr), on the occasion of the International Day of Sport, Javier Zanetti, Inter Vice President and former player, said, “I imagine the UN as a big football team.”
He also said, “For sure, many things can be done through the UN. I think the UN has a big impact at a global level, and if all states that are part of it unite, if there is inclusion, the message can be way stronger.”
‘Football for the Goals’ is a United Nations initiative that provides a platform for the global football community to engage with and advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is an opportunity to build on football’s powerful and influential reach and to work together to become agents of change by aligning messaging, strategies, and operations with the aspirations of the SDGs.
Zanetti continued, “I am here at the United Nations today as I think it’s an important day. ‘Football for the Goal’ is a crucial project for the world, and I think that many positive things can be done through sports. I am the Inter Vice President. Inter has had a project since 1997 called ‘Intercampus’ in 30 countries that works with more than thousands of boys and girls. For us, sport is a tool for inclusion, and that’s why we are here.”
Asked about the more important thing he learned by playing football, Zanetti answered, “the values transmitted by sport.”
He also said, “I think that football is a sport that reaches everywhere, has a substantial impact, and has a significant dimension, and with football, many positive things can also be done to help the children who need it the most. So, we have a big responsibility, and hopefully, we can bring it forward with many projects that can improve sport and education worldwide.”
His main message for the world is “to live in peace.”
He explained, “Nowadays, we see many negative things and wars that hopefully, we can put an end to this so that we live in a peaceful world where racism doesn’t exist and where no type of discrimination exists. I believe we all deserve a better world.”
To mark the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), this year’s event at UN Headquarters in New York recognized the role of sport in addressing climate change, promoting gender equality, and tackling racism.
At the event, Zanetti said, “I think that sport has an immense impact, but it has to be used for positive messages.”
He concluded, “I thank sport for making me look not only at my inner self or my personal interest but also at making me look at the other, to be able to help, and I believe that this is a key value that the world needs today.”
