The Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), António Vitorino, said that “there is a need an urgent need to bring all these positive aspects on the narrative of migration to compensate some of the flip sides of migration that also exist.”

Speaking to journalists on Friday (31 Mar), at the end of the New York Session of the International Dialogue on Migration (IDM), Vitorino said that “the objective of this dialogue is to emphasize the contribution that human mobility in general and migration in particularly can provide to attain the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

The IOM chief noted a recent study of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) showing that “an additional 1 percent of emigration as the potential to boost the GDP of the destination countries by 2 percent.”

Vitorino said, “The idea that migration is a burden is not completely proved by the facts. The reality show that there is a positive contribution of migration to the growth of GDP in the countries of destination.

According to him, “migrants, remittances represent 800 billion US dollars every year, which means that it is more than official development aid and foreign direct investment taken together.”

Vitorino also noted that “unfortunately, the remittances to countries of origin still pay a very excessive cost of transfers.”

IOM’s Director General also highlighted that “over half of CEOs of leading technology companies in the world have migration backgrounds” and “the two front runners on vaccination on COVID-19 – Moderna and Pfizer – were founded by migrants themselves”.

“We believe that there is a need an urgent need to bring all these positive aspects on the narrative of migration to compensate some of the flip sides of migration that also exist,” concluded Vitorino.
