STORYLINE:

The Chair of the 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW67) said the agreed conclusions reached at the end of this year’s meeting are “a significant milestone on gender equality in the context of technology, innovation and education in the digital age.”

Briefing journalists in New York on Friday (24 Mar), Mathu Joyini, who is the Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Africa, said the document “really is a result of a shared commitment among Member States”, but also contributions from partners in civil society.

María del Carmen Squeff, the Permanent Representative from Argentina who helped facilitate the negotiations, said the concluded conclusions address “for the first time, in a very comprehensive way, the challenges faced by women and girls on technology and innovation and education in the digital age, with a strong gender and human rights perspective.”

The Director of Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Division at UN Women, Sarah Hendricks, also called the document “a major milestone”, saying it is the “first ever global normative framework on gender equality, technology, innovation and education in the digital age.”

According to Hendricks, “this is no small feat” because “it recognizes and advances a transformative vision for women and girls in terms of being equal and connected across the world.”

The CSW meets in March each year to address the widespread inequalities, violence and discrimination women continue to face, all around the world.

This year’s theme was “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.
