“We estimate that there are around 130,000 to 140,000 women who are at reproductive age and require medication services and protection for gender-based violence. From them, an estimated 40,000 across all of the territories in Syria are currently pregnant and will deliver within the next three months. Many of the facilities that we visited are already depleted or damaged or both, their stockouts some medications for treating even very basic things like the flu, much less something as complicated as having a C section.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Laila Baker, Arab States Regional Director, UN Population Fund (UNFPA):
“We have, they are called kits that basically they are a surgical theater and those are being delivered so that you can have the supplies to be able to deliver C sections. We have a referral system from our partners and within the shelters for free of charge. Emergency deliveries. Today when we visited the maternity hospital, all the wards were full. And we have an agreement with all of our partners around that. It's functioning, their supplies are depleted. We are working to ensure that those supplies and with our partners including with UNICEF and WHO are constantly replenished. Tt is difficult, but we are doing our very best to ensure that there are no gaps. And the appeal and what we are appealing for will be a huge contribution to that.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Laila Baker, Arab States Regional Director, UN Population Fund (UNFPA):
“UNFPA launched its appeal for the whole of Syria yesterday in the amount of $24 million. We hope that that will bring great relief in terms of the much-needed assistance, both in terms of people and supplies. We stand ready with our partners to be able to deliver to the most vulnerable communities and individuals on the ground.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Laila Baker, Arab States Regional Director, UN Population Fund (UNFPA):
“The appeal is only for the next three months, it will only address very basic acute needs. And we are working in collaboration with the rest of the UN family with UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, particularly on critical issues around shelter protections and water and sanitation. Many of the shelters that we visited, have no sanitation facilities, and for a woman, many of whom are pregnant, they're facing dire circumstances.”
