STORYLINE:
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, began his visit to Lebanon today (26 Jan) by meeting Lebanese officials in Beirut.

During meetings with Lebanese political leaders and security officials, the UN peacekeeping chief stressed the importance of maintaining calm along the 120-kilometer Blue Line for lasting peace in the region.

He expressed his appreciation for Lebanon’s commitment to Security Council Resolution 1701, which forms the core of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) current mandate, and the country’s overall support of the mission.

He met Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence Michael Martin, Director General of Lebanese General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, caretaker Defense Minister Maurice Sleem, Lebanese Army Commander (LAF) Commander General Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri, and caretaker Foreign Affairs Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.
