STORYLINE:
On the last day of his visit to Cabo Verde, Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the Ocean Race Summit in Mindelo, saying that “ending the ocean emergency is a race we must win, and by working as one, it’s a race we can win.”
On the last day of the visit to the country, Guterres met with Prime Minister José Ulisses Correia e Silva and National Assembly President Austelino Tavares Correia, as well as Ocean Race Chairman Richard Brisius before addressing the Summit.
Speaking from the podium at the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo, in São Vicente, a state-of-the-art facility that hosts large marine scientific equipment such as deep-sea robots, as well as electronics workshops, and cutting-edge laboratories, the Secretary-General said, “the ocean supports the air we breathe, the food we consume, the cultures and identities that define us, the jobs and prosperity that sustain us, the regulation of weather and climate, and billions of animals, plants and microorganisms that call the ocean home. The ocean is life. The ocean is livelihoods. And the ocean is in trouble.”

Closing the event, the UN chief participated in a Relay4Nature ceremony, receiving a baton that started travelling around the world almost in May of 2021 to call on world leaders to radically increase their ambitions to protect the seas.
The initiative started with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson, was then passed to politicians like French President Emmanuel Macron, celebrities like Jason Momoa, and arrived in Cabo Verde by boat, all the way from Alicante, in Spain, in the hands of Boris Herrmann, the skipper of Team Malizia.
Guterres handed the Baton to Odara dos Santos Brito, a student from Liceu Jorge Barbosa, in São Vicente.
Before leaving the country, the Secretary-General met with President José Maria Neves
The Ocean Race first set sail in 1973, taking sailors around the world every three or four years.
On Friday night, the country became the first ever West African nation in the competition’s history to host a stopover.
