STORYLINE:

The UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced a first inter-agency humanitarian convoy reached Ukrainian government-controlled areas close to embattled Soledar Friday morning (20 Jan) in Donetsk Oblast. Soledar has seen some of the fiercest fighting in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks.

"Our colleagues in Ukraine have just reached government-controlled areas close to Soledar in eastern Donetsk Oblast," said Jens Laerke, OCHA spokesperson in Friday’s press briefing in Geneva.

The three-truck humanitarian convoy is bringing in “food, water, hygiene kits, medicines and other medical supplies to support over 800 people who remain in communities surrounding Soledar,” Mr. Laerke added. The convoy departed from Dnipro.

More convoys are expected in the coming days. OCHA Spokesperson said that the UN and its partners are striving to increase inter-agency relief operations to areas close to the frontlines in Ukraine, where needs are acute.
