STORYLINE:
Actor Idris Elba tells world leaders that poor farmers need investment not handouts at award ceremony in Davos.
Actor Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba have called on world leaders to invest in small-scale farmers at an awards ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos this evening (16 Jan).
The pair were accepting an award for their work advocating for food security, climate change and environmental conservation.
Actor Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba have told world leaders that they must increase funding to help the world’s poorest rural communities.
Idris Elba said, “The poor of this world are not looking for aid and handouts they are looking for investment. Investment in people, in nature in innovation in partnership.”
Idris and Sabrina made their comments after receiving the 2023 Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland for their leadership in addressing food security, climate change and environmental conservation.
The couple were appointed UN Goodwill Ambassadors for IFAD, the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development in April 2020 and have been advocating on behalf of the millions of poor small-scale farmers across the globe who are struggling to grow crops, in spite of being responsible for producing one-third of the world’s food and more than 70 percent of the food produced in Africa and Asia.
Sabrina Dhowre Elba said, “Too often small-scale farmers are only one shock, one flood one drought or one failed harvest away from having to sell their assets to feed themselves.”
They have spent the last two years meeting with several world leaders to discuss the need to support small-scale farmers adapt to climate change and other shocks.
Many African countries face widespread drought. The Elbas have visited projects funded by the UN agency that provide irrigation and other technology to help them cope with limited water resources. They called on the world community to increase funding in this sector as a means to improve food security and reduce hunger.
Sabrina Dhowre Elba stated, “Rural communities are filled with talented youthful populations, vibrant markets and enormous potential. We’ve seen in first hand. Not only can they feed themselves, but they can and must help feed the world.”
