3. SOUNDBITE (English) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Islamic Republic of Pakistan:
“Pakistan has had the privilege to chair the group of 77 and China three times in the past. However, leading the group this year, as our nation's collectively confronted the perfect storm of multiple external shocks, COVID, climate and conflict, was especially challenging and yet rewarding. Our group responded to the crises of food, fuel and financial facing developing countries with collective vision, determination and unity.”
4. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council Chamber
5. UPSOUND (English), Chair of the meeting:
“With these remarks, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has just concluded its tenure as the presiding country of the Group of 77 and China for 2022. Now I have the great honor and pleasure to pass the gavel of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China to the Republic of Cuba.”
6. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council Chamber
7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Miguel Díaz-Canel, President, Cuba:
“More than ever, today it is imperative to reach consensus on those areas that affect us as countries and as a group. Only by doing this will we be able to meet the aspirations of our people, who are historically bypassed in their desire for social justice. Excellencies, during these difficult and troubled times, there are many attempts to fracture the countries of the south, let us teach a lesson of unity, let us demonstrate the value of cooperation and solidarity.”
8. Wide shot, Trusteeship Council Chamber
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Csaba Kőrösi, President, United Nations General Assembly:
“As we step into 2023, we can no longer ignore the pressing need for reforming our financial institutions. Under Pakistan’s steadfast leadership, you have worked to hold those institutions to account. You have expressed your desire for reform. And you have highlighted the urgent need to address these interlocking crises. While I have no doubt 2023 will bring its own challenges, there is reason to hope.”
10. Med shot, participants in the ceremony
11. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, UN Secretary-General:
“While each challenge is different, they are all felt most keenly in the countries you represent. In many countries, we can draw a straight line between the hardships suffered by your people, and the continued failure of developed countries and global institutions to support developing countries on multiple fronts. And in every case, there are challenges that could actually be solved by standing as one in the world in solidarity.”
