“We are very much committed to any peace negotiation that comes and brings us to one result: territorial integrity, sovereignty and peace for our people. But as my president has been constantly saying, we are not going to trade any inch of Ukrainian soil. And without having Russia's army out of Ukraine, we will not discuss any of this negotiation.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister, Ukraine:
“My president and our leadership is also clear saying that we are open for any good offices that countries may suggest, when it comes to the mediation, when it comes to the release of the political prisoners, release of the prisoners of war, or bringing back forcibly deported ukrainian children - and there are 1000s of these children. So it's something that my country is opened up for, if any third country is ready to suggest their good offices.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister, Ukraine:
“Actually, in this eight years, we've been reiterating our message that Russia should be accountable for its violation of human rights and other kinds of crimes. But it didn't happen. It didn't happen. And then the result of this is the war that they started in 22. Because if the lesson, the Crimean lesson was learned, we didn't have the war. So now the second question is that Russia should be accountable, because if it's not accountable, if the war is not contained in Ukraine, this will be a larger war.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister, Ukraine:
“So these are the two main resolutions that we will focus our diplomatic of effort around this year. Number one step: in February this year, peace formula. And the second one will be accountability.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister, Ukraine:
“I'm sure that the war that we have is a result of a huge miscalculation of Russian leadership, because they thought that they would have the Crimean scenario for the second time. They thought that they would take control of Ukraine in three days or seven or a week, but they failed. And this is what we have been proving, that Ukrainians have no other choice but fighting. And you know what I find the most amazing about my people, is that we don't complain.”

STORYLINE:

Ukraine hopes to have the UN General Assembly vote on a resolution based on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy 10-point peace plan in February, the country’s First Deputy Foreign Minister informed.

Speaking to journalists in New York on Thursday (12 Jan), Emine Dzhaparova said her country is “very much committed to any peace negotiation that comes and brings us to one result: territorial integrity, sovereignty and peace for our people.”

Dzhaparova added, “But as my president has been constantly saying, we are not going to trade any inch of Ukrainian soil. And without having Russia's army out of Ukraine, we will not discuss any of this negotiation.”

The First Deputy Foreign Minister also said Ukraine is open to any country’s help “when it comes to the mediation, when it comes to the release of the political prisoners, release of the prisoners of war, or bringing back forcibly deported ukrainian children - and there are 1000s of these children.”

Dzhaparova noted that she is from Crimea, the region that was invaded in 2014, and said that, in the last eight years, Ukraine has “been reiterating our message that Russia should be accountable for its violation of human rights and other kinds of crimes.”

“But it didn't happen. It didn't happen. And then the result of this is the war that they started in 22. Because if the lesson, the Crimean lesson was learned, we didn't have the war. So now the second question is that Russia should be accountable, because if it's not accountable, if the war is not contained in Ukraine, this will be a larger war,” said the official from Ukraine.

According to the First Deputy Foreign Minister, Ukraine will focus on two main resolutions this year: the first, in February, about peace formula; and the second one, later in the year, will be about accountability.

Dzhaparova added, “I'm sure that the war that we have is a result of a huge miscalculation of Russian leadership, because they thought that they would have the Crimean scenario for the second time. They thought that they would take control of Ukraine in three days or seven or a week, but they failed. And this is what we have been proving, that Ukrainians have no other choice but fighting.

“And you know what I find the most amazing about my people, is that we don't complain,” the First Deputy Foreign Minister concluded.
