Reiteramos nuestro llamamiento para que las fuerzas de seguridad cumplan las normas de derechos humanos y garanticen que sólo se hace uso de la fuerza cuando es estrictamente necesario y, en tal caso, respetando plenamente los principios de legalidad, precaución y proporcionalidad.Recordamos que los derechos a la libertad de expresión y de reunión pacífica deben ser respetados y protegidos.”

STORYLINE:
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) expressed its concern at the rising violence in Peru seen on Monday (9 Jan), “one of the deadliest days since unrest erupted in early December.”

According to official reports, the total number of deaths since 7 December 2022 to 40 people and 518 injured in clashes involving police and armed forces.

Marta Hurtado, OHCHR' spokesperson, urged the Peruvian authorities to carry out “prompt, impartial and effective investigations into the deaths and injuries, holding those responsible to account and ensuring victims receive access to justice and redress.”

Ahead of a planned national strike over the coming days, the UN Human Rights Office is calling the demonstrators to show restraint while exercising their fundamental right of peaceful assembly.

The OHCHR spokesperson reiterated the call for security forces to comply with human rights standards and ensure that “force is only used when strictly necessary, and, if so, in full compliance with the principles of legality, precaution, and proportionality.”

She recalled that the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly must be respected and protected.
