In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least 18 civilians were killed, including 17 on Sunday, and thousands have been displaced and are seeking shelter at a site in Roe, a UN Spokesperson informed.
Briefing journalists on Tuesday (10 Jan), Stéphane Dujarric said the UN Mission in the country (MONUSCO) is conducting new patrols in the Roe-Drodro area of Djugu territory in Ituri province, after a series of attacks by CODECO militia.
According to the Spokesperson, “the Mission reports that the situation is under control but remains tense.”
Dujarric also answered questions regarding Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s threat to evict thousands of Congolese refugees living in Rwanda.
He noted that “every member State has a responsibility to uphold international refugee law, to never force people back who are fleeing violence and to ensure that they are given protection and safety and that applies to every member State.”
The Spokesperson added that the “M23 group, as far as we know, continues to operate and there are other groups” and that “large parts of that area are not safe for people, who will seek safety wherever they can.”
