STORYLINE:
The Security Council mandate for UN cross-border aid operations from Türkiye to north-west Syria runs until 10 January 2023 - at the peak of winter. With no alternative available to meet the scale and scope of needs, millions of Syrians depend on the Council extending this lifeline.
A joint statement was issued on Monday (02 Jan) by the heads of the UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA), International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN refugee agency (UNHCR).
The top UN officials urged, if the Council fails to extend resolution, “the consequences will be catastrophic for 4.1 million people in non-Government controlled areas”.
In 2022, delivered aid from across the Turkish border into Syria, reached an average of 2.7 million people every month. This work included early recovery and livelihood support to strengthen the resilience of communities across Syria.
Yahya Al-Qaddour, teacher at Al Nahda Alnamuzajeeh School, Syria, noted, “The students are all residents in camps. Tents do not protect them from the heat of the sun or the cold of winter.”
He continued, “My message to the international community is to continue the delivery of aid to north-west Syria. There are huge numbers of displaced people and most displaced families lack financial capacity.”
Due to the deepening economic crisis and the ongoing conflict, humanitarian and protection needs have increased in the north-west in the last year with 4.1 million people now dependent on aid.
Ahmed Al-Hammadi, teacher at Amal Almushreka School, Syria, said, “People have been displaced without basic necessities. Cross-border assistance covers the basics needed for them to survive.”
He also added, “I appeal to the international community to consider the suffering of people and children who are suffering, whether in the summer, winter or any other season.”
Unlike earlier resolutions, which extended cross-border operations for 12 months, the Council’s most recent authorization extended for just six months.
