STORYLINE:
Representatives of Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland today (3 Jan) took part of an installation ceremony of their national flags, as newly elected non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Ecuador’s Ambassador Hernán Pérez Loose said, “We cannot be silent in this current situation. The military aggression against Ukraine is driving the world towards its worst humanitarian crisis, economic crisis since World War II.”

Japan’s Ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro emphasized three points, “First, active contribution to global peace and security. Second, addressing the common challenges of the international community based on the idea of human security. And third, strengthening the rule of law.”

Malta’s Ambassador Vanessa Frazier emphasized, “We will be guided by the three pillars of security, sustainability, and solidarity. And we will continue to advocate for peace, security, stability, dialogue, de-escalation and respect of international law.”

Mozambique’s Ambassador Pedro Comissário Afonso noted, “As an elected member we will therefore attach great importance to situations that constitute serious threats to peaceful existence of states in the 21st century. For her part, Switzerland’s Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl said, “Our actions will be guided by universality and impartiality, and in doing so, let international law, human rights and humanitarian principles be our compass.”

Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland will serve on the Council during the 2023-2024 period, and replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway, which completed their two-year term.

The Council also includes Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), serving the 2021-2022 term, and the United States, United Kingdom, Russian Federation, China, and France as the five permanent members.
