STORYLINE:
Destroyed in August 2021 by armed terrorist groups, the Songho and Yawakanda bridges have been rehabilitated as part of an extensive project funded by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

The rehabilitation of these infrastructures will end the isolation of the localities and allow the free movement of people and goods between the regions of Mopti and Bandiangara.

Nearly 2,500,000 people will benefit from this important corridor, which also allows for the intersection between Mali and Burkina.

The project also includes the construction of a water supply point as well as the installation of solar-powered streetlamps, and the planting of 300 trees.

A local Malian company carried out the project implementation and created 150 jobs.

The official handover ceremony took place in the presence of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General of Mali, local authorities including the Governor of Bandiagara, and many officials as well as the surrounding population.

El-Ghassim Wane, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Mali, said, ‘’This road unites three regions of Mali; it is also an important corridor between neighboring countries, not only Burkina but also the coastal states, because, as you know, Mali is a landlocked country. So, this road represents a huge economy and a prosperous economy, is a basis for lasting peace.’’

For the Governor of the Bandiagara region, Sidi Mohamed El Bechir, the handing over of the Songho and Yawakanda bridges will increase the population’s resilience and revitalize the local economy.

He said, ‘’This bridge must be preserved for the value and respect of human dignity.’’

The reconstruction of the Yawankanda bridge cost nearly 198 million.

It was made possible by a contribution from the Kingdom of Sweden to the MINUSMA Trust Fund.

As for the reconstruction of the Songho bridge, nearly 142 million CFA francs were made available to the Fund by the Kingdom of Sweden.

Kristina Kühnel, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Mali, said, " It's important for the people of Mali and for stability and peace in this country, and that's why it is important for Sweden because we want to contribute to this. We are also a long-standing partner to the UN system and a long-standing partner to Mali and to the Malian population. And for us, in a situation of crisis, it's humbly natural for us to support MINUSMA Trust Fund, which actually implements projects at the request of the people.”

Mohamed Lamine Haïdara, Permanent Secretary of the Political Crisis Management of the Center of Mali, said, ‘’We cannot talk about economic recovery without roads, without freedom of movement, without freedom of movement of goods and services.’’

The laying of the foundation stone for constructing a Seniors and Youth House marked the end of the inauguration ceremony.
