2. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“Number one, no surprise, electricity. I was absolutely stunned to see the degree to which electricity is the gateway to everything else. Without electricity, there's no warmth and the weather's getting colder, without electricity, there's no medical services, there's no transport, there's no light.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“You can't get the country back into production without de-mining. And I think, as you were saying to me earlier, Ukraine is probably now the most mine polluted country in the world. So the urgent international priority to de-mine is one that we will also do what we can.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“Even in war, people want to see a future, perhaps particularly in war and restarting elements of a local economy is a central priority for people. People want to go back to work. They want their children to go back to schools. They want transport to work. They want the economy to work. They want employment to happen.”

STORYLINE:

The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, wrapped up a four-day visit to Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference with Prime Minister Denys Shmygal in Kyiv today (15 Dec), Griffiths thanked the Ukrainian authorities for the constructive and open relationship and highlighted three priority needs.

He said that the first is electricity, without which there are no medical services, no transportation and no light. The second is de-mining, with Ukraine probably now the most mine-polluted country in the world. And thirdly, restarting the elements of a local economy.

Griffiths noted that, since the beginning of the war, humanitarian agencies have reached just under 14 million people with assistance, adding that aid operations will continue in Ukraine.
