Speaking to journalists on the death of an Irish peacekeeper, Foreign and Defense Minister Simon Coveney, said “it is a reminder to all of us of the sacrifices that UN peacekeepers make across the world”.

Simon Coveney told reporters that Ireland "has lost a peacekeeper, has lost a soldier, has lost somebody who has been working for this country and for the UN in an incident in Lebanon”. Private Sean Rooney was killed in an incident that took place Wednesday (14 Dec) in the area of Al-Aqbieh, outside of The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) area of operations in South Lebanon.

The Minister continued, “there are another three soldiers who were injured in that incident, one of them seriously.”

Convey underlined, “they are people who every week, put themselves in harm’s way to protect people that they have never met in many cases, vulnerable populations in parts of the world that are turned apart by conflict.”

Also today, in a written statement, the Secretary-General expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the peacekeeper who died and to the people and the Government of Ireland. He urged a swift investigation by relevant authorities to determine the facts related to the incident and the need for accountability.
