3.SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“These women and activists have appealed to us, the United Nations, for support. They made their request to us loud and clear: remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. The reason why is straightforward. The Commission is the premier UN body for promoting gender equality and empowering women. It cannot do its important work if it is being undermined from within. Iran’s membership at this moment is an ugly stain on the Commission’s credibility.”

5.SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
Today we have an opportunity to do something that is clearly the right thing to do. We can act, in this moment, to support women. We can act in direct response to our constituents – the global community of women. The Iranian government wants nothing more than to wiggle its way out of this vote. To use misinformation and procedural tricks to obscure the truth and avoid accountability.”

7.SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“I urge you to keep this simple. We have Iranian women and activists here in the room with us right now. Let’s do right by them. Let’s do right by women and girls around the world. Let’s vote to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. Let’s do this for women. For life. And for freedom.”

“It is not at all unexpected that the United States is taking such unlawful action against Iran, given its long-standing hostility towards the Iranian people, but if carried out, it would be exceedingly dangerous to the UN system integrity.”

STORYLINE:

A Resolution to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the remainder of its 2022–2026 term was adopted at a meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The recorded vote is 29 in favour, 8 against, 16 abstentions. The Resolution was introduced by the United States.

Speaking before the vote today (14 Dec) in New York, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that the resolution is an important one. It will reverberate across the globe and answers the call of civil society voices in Iran. She commended the Iranian activists in the room and those around the world, for their courage, for their foresight, for their sacrifices, and for their leadership.

Speaking about the death of Mahsa Amini, and the two reporters Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammedi, who were put into solitary confinement, where they remain, like so many other journalists and activists; young women and girls have been killed or disappeared for speaking out – women and girls like Sarina Esmailzadeh, Nika Shakarami, and so many others, Ambassador Greenfield reiterated, “these women and activists have appealed to us, the United Nations, for support. They made their request to us loud and clear: remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women.”

She continued, “The Commission is the premier UN body for promoting gender equality and empowering women. It cannot do its important work if it is being undermined from within. Iran’s membership at this moment is an ugly stain on the Commission’s credibility.”

The US Ambassador continued, “today we have an opportunity to do something that is clearly the right thing to do. We can act, in this moment, to support women. We can act in direct response to our constituents – the global community of women.”

Ambassador Greenfield said, “the Iranian government wants nothing more than to wiggle its way out of this vote. To use misinformation and procedural tricks to obscure the truth and avoid accountability.”

She urged the Members to keep the vote “simple,” adding that “we have Iranian women and activists here in the room with us right now. Let’s do right by them. Let’s do right by women and girls around the world.”

Ambassador Greenfield reiterated, “let’s vote to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women. Let’s do this for women. For life. And for freedom.”

Irani Ambassador Amir Saeid Jalil Iravani also spoke before the vote. He said, “it is not at all unexpected that the United States is taking such unlawful action against Iran, given its long-standing hostility towards the Iranian people, but if carried out, it would be exceedingly dangerous to the UN system integrity.”

The Ambassador said, “the Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejected and strongly condemned the draft resolution and kindly urged the concerned Members to vote against it.”

After the vote, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke to reporters at the stakeout. She said, “this is really a great day for the Commission and for the UN. We stood up for Mahsa. We stood up for Niloufar. We stood up for Elaheh, for Sarina, for Nika, and for so many others, for all the women and girls of Iran, we stood up for women. We stood up for life, and we stood up for freedom. And for that we're most proud.”

The Council also decided by recorded vote (12 in favour-26 against-11 abstentions) not to wave rule 54 of the rules of procedure for the consideration of an oral proposal to request a legal opinion on L.4
