I'm here to express solidarity, especially during these harsh winter months. Around us, you can see a winter landscape, but it is a winter landscape that means, for many vulnerable people, a lot of hardship because they freeze. Sometimes there are blackouts. The electricity doesn't work, the heating doesn't work, and they don't even know how to actually get through the winter. I'm also here because we have had my office, the UN Human Rights Office, that has had an uninterrupted presence in Ukraine since 2014, documenting, monitoring human rights violations, which…this work, of course, we have intensified since the start of the war.”

STORYLINE:
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Sunday (04 Dec) began a four-day official visit to Ukraine, at the invitation of the Government.
The High Commissioner visited Kyiv and neighboring areas, Bucha and Irpin. He was accompanied by staff of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
“I'm in Ukraine at this point in time out of solidarity with the victims of this horrible war, which was caused by the invasion of the Russian Federation on the 24th of February. I'm here to express solidarity, especially during these harsh winter months. He is due to meet with senior national and local Government officials and civil society, as well as representatives of victims’ groups, including relatives of missing or captured civilians and prisoners of war.
He will also be travelling to Kharkiv, Izium. Türk will hold a news conference in Kyiv at the end of his mission, on Wednesday 7 December at around 13h00 local time.
