"Unfortunately, persons with disabilities still are the population most vulnerable and less targeted. There are very few organizations that we are working for persons with disabilities and thanks to UNHCR, we are really targeting those who most need it. If the funding goes out, definitely it will impact a person with disabilities."

"It takes me 1 hour to get here. I help others by providing information about the different locations like learning centres, hospitals. If they are not aware of the address. If I go back to Myanmar I will help people out there as well."

STORYLINE:

A study last year estimated that 12 per cent of the almost 1 million Rohingya refugees in camps in Bangladesh’s Cox's Bazar District are living with disabilities. Those who work with people with disabilities here think the number is conservative. Due to the hilly and often muddy terrain, those with disabilities and older people face challenges moving around and accessing services.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and its partners, notably Handicap International-Humanity & Inclusion (HI), support with rehabilitation, assistive devices and other services aimed at moving towards independence. They train other volunteers in inclusion, education around stigma and communication techniques. This aspect of the work is particularly important this year. Today's International Day of Persons with Disabilities focuses on transformative solutions for inclusive development.
