RECENT - 2022, JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN

3. Various shots, workshop on the Strengthening of the Oversight Role of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly of South Sudan
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Claudia Sayago, Senior Judicial Affairs Officer, Rule of Law, United Nations Mission in South Sudan UNMISS):
“The role of parliament in undertaking any reform of anti-corruption is critical. Political will is key for reforms and for subsequent implementation, so it’s very important to convince the new parliament; many of the parliamentarians have not received any previous training on anti-corruption. They are parliamentarians for the first time and South Sudan, obviously, has a peace agreement to implement and the Revitalized Agreement specifies certain actions to be taken to counter corruption, to enhance good governance.”
5. Wide shots, Rebecca Joshua Okwachi, Chief Whip and Chair of Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rebecca Joshua Okwachi, Chief Whip and Chair, Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly
“This is a very, very important workshop which looks at the role of the parliament, the Transitional National Legislative Assembly together with the Anti-Corruption and the intention of this workshop is to give the members of parliament an opportunity to look at one of their functions. Of course, the function of the parliament, first, they are representatives of the people; they are also legislators; and also, they play the role of the oversight [mechanism].”
7. Wide shots, Transitional National Legislative Assembly officials at workshop
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Innocent Minega, African-European Parliamentarians Initiative:
“What we’ve been doing here for the last two days is a good starting point. We identified a lot of challenges, but we also saw in different ways through various interventions of people here, the drive and the determination to join in this fight against corruption.”

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently held a workshop for new parliamentarians on strengthening anti-corruption oversight.

As South Sudan begins drafting a permanent constitution and preparing for free, fair, and credible elections, it is considered critical for legislative bodies to be cognizant of their roles and responsibilities in order to continue energizing ongoing peace processes.

A strong stance against corrupt practices is considered vital in ensuring that State institutions are strong accountable, and democratic.

The two-day workshop in Juba was aimed at enhancing the capacities of newly appointed parliamentarians at the national level and building networks of solidarity to help them develop and advocate for a legislative agenda that fully represents the interests of the South Sudanese people.
