STORYLINE:

The General Assembly today (1 Dec) honoured the memory of former President of China Jiang Zemin with a minute of silence.

On behalf of the General Assembly, GA President Csaba Kőrösi requested the Representative of China “to convey our condolences to the government and people of China and to the bereaved family of his Excellency Jiang Zemin.”

Jiang spoke at the General Assembly during its 50th session, in 1995. In his remarks to the plennary he said, “disputes between states should be resolved through peaceful negotiations and consultations instead of resorting to the use or threat of force.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of the passing of President Jiang.

Guterres commended Jiang’s “personal warmth and openness,” and recalled “the excellent cooperation” with his government when he was Prime Minister of Portugal to ensure the smooth transition of the handover to China of the administration of Macau.

The statement read, “Jiang Zemin was a steadfast advocate for international engagement. His tenure was marked by substantial economic progress and China’s successful accession to the World Trade Organization. Under his leadership, China hosted the landmark 4th World Conference on Women in 1995. In September 2000, he participated in the Millennium Summit here at the United Nations.”

Jiang passed away on Wednesday (30 Nov) at the age of 96.
