STORYLINE:
A new inter-agency convoy with vital supplies reached the people of Kherson, in Ukraine, on Monday.
This is the second inter-agency convoy to Kherson in one week, following the mission that entered the city last Monday, less the 72 hours after it was retaken by the Government of Ukraine.
Monday’s 13-truck convoy prioritized the most urgent humanitarian needs of the over 100,000 people who remain in the city.
According to a briefing by the Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine last week, people in Kherson are facing tremendous challenges to access food, water and electricity and heating, and health care.
Recent attacks on the city and other areas of the Kherson region, including on Monday, might lead to further needs.
Amongst the items the UN and our partners delivered, hospitals in Kherson will have medical kits enough to treat 100,000 patients for a period of three months, and additional kits for women and girls’ reproductive health, and supplies for surgery, chronic diseases, and trauma, as most health centres lack essential medicines and medical supplies.
Humanitarians also delivered one-week worth of food for nearly 2,500 people, water for over 10,000 people, blankets, sleeping bags and other supplies to nearly 500 families and nearly 2,300 solar lamps, which will help people in Kherson to have light at home as the city is cut off from energy supply.
More than 1,200 women will receive dignity kits, with essential items, including clothes and female hygiene products.
The mission, facilitated by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), was only possible thanks to the fast support from UN agencies and NGOs, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), World Food Programme (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), and the NGOs Norwegian Refugee Council, Danish Refugee Council, ACTED, Intersos and HEKS-EPER.
