2. Wide shot, General Assembly
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly:
“The war in Ukraine, now in its ninth month, has only amplified these effects, displacing millions and forcing countries to make unprecedented choices to meet the needs of their citizens. Through it all, the Security Council – the main guarantor of international peace and security – has remained blocked, unable to fully carry out its mandate.”
4. Wide shot, General Assembly
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly:
“Growing numbers are now demanding its reform. During High-Level Week, one-third of world leaders underscored the urgent need to reform the Council – more than double the number in 2021. They are looking to the General Assembly to lead on change. We should admit that this is about the credibility and the relevance of the United Nations.”
6. Wide shot, General Assembly
7 SOUNDBITE (English) Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly:
“A choice is at hand: does the Assembly continue its annual repetition of well-known positions – or, moved by these crises, does it swing into action to find common ground and achieve breakthroughs? Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen: You simply must answer this call.”
8. Wide shot, President of the General Assembly and Michal Mlynar, Permanent Representative to the United Nations of Slovakia, and Tareq Albanai, Permanent Representative of Kuwait on the Security Council reform, walk to the stakeout
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly:
“Let me dissolve a misperception, that it is only the position of the P5 [5 permanent member of the Security Council] that makes the negotiations difficult. The negotiations have never produced a result that should have been considered by the P5. I think there is a huge task ahead for the General Assembly, now, in this year, and we will see for how long, to iron out an acceptable, workable compromise among 193 members. We have never reached that point.”
12. Wide shot, President of the General Assembly shake hands
