As Under-Secretary-General for United Nations Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the Secretary-General’s Chef de Cabinet, Courtenay Rattray, conclude their visit to South Sudan, Lacroix said, “you cannot build a durable peace if you don’t involve women.”
Lacroix and Rattray spent time with women’s representatives, listening to challenges and opportunities faced by women as they struggle to be recognized and included in political, governance and security institutions.

So, these commitments need to be respected at the national and local level.”
Rattray and Lacroix also met top political leaders, including First Vice President Riek Machar, one of the key signatories to the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the 2018 peace deal that has helped broker a tenuous peace in this country that has been devastated by civil war. \
Their final meeting was with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
