“Komati, by retiring and then by repurposing the land and the area and helping the workers find employment in new sectors to make cleaner, less carbon intensive energy, that’s a very important transition for South Africa, for Eskom, and also for the world community. I’ll be going to COP27 tomorrow where people are discussing exactly this kind of project.”

SOUNDBITE (English) Andre de Ruyter, Chief Executive Officer, Eskom:
“We are very pleased with the visit by the World Bank president, Mr. David Malpass, to Komati today. I think it’s a strong signal of support for the repurposing and repowering of Komati. As the last unit at this power station has now ceased operation, on the one hand it’s a bit of a sad day, we are saying goodbye to coal. But on the other hand, it’s a day that signals the re-birth into a new, cleaner, greener form of electricity generation, preserving jobs and preserving the role that Eskom has played in this community.”

STORYLINE:
Ahead of traveling to Sharm el Sheikh for the COP27 climate summit, World Bank Group President David Malpass on Sunday (6 Nov) visited the Komati coal-fired plant in South Africa, which is being decommissioned and repurposed.
The World Bank Group Board of Executive Directors just approved South Africa’s request for a $497 million project to decommission and repurpose the Komati coal-fired power plant using renewables and batteries.
The project will also create opportunities for the affected workers and communities. This is in line with the government’s efforts to transition the country toward a low carbon development path with reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all.
The decommissioning and repurposing of the Komati coal-fired plant is a demonstration project that can serve as a reference on how to transition fossil-fuel assets for future projects in South Africa and around the world.
