5. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States:
“We will work with other member states to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The work of promoting gender equality and empowering women should not be entrusted to a member state that systematically oppresses its own women and girls.”
6. Wide shot, Iran Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani at the podium
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Amir Saeid Iravani, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Iran:
“The objective of today’s meetings is clearly to interfere in domestic affairs of a sovereign state, in flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law upon which the international legal order is founded. Iran has consistently rejected the politicization of the human rights issues and manipulation of UN system by certain states to advance their short sighted political objectives.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Amir Saeid Iravani, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Iran:
“Iranian law enforcement can prevent or manage any unrest and maintain complete trust, tranquillity across the country, but they will not do so at any cost. The importance of human life and dignity is what ultimately guide our decision. Therefore, the restraint displayed by Iranian law enforcement should not be a sign of weakness. We believe that exaggerating and underestimating protests in Iran serves only as a diversion from finding a viable solution or resolving the problem.”
10. Pan right, Iravani walks away
STORYLINE:
United States Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield today (2 Nov) said, “we cannot stay silent as security forces detain, torture and gun down peaceful protesters” in Iran, and called for Iran to be removed from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
Following an Arria Formula meeting on the protests in Iran organized by Albania and the United States, Thomas-Greenfield said, “dozens of civil society, activists, journalists and lawyers are locked up.”
She said, “we will work with other member states to remove the Islamic Republic of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The work of promoting gender equality and empowering women should not be entrusted to a member state that systematically oppresses its own women and girls.”
Earlier today, Iran Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani told reporters that the objective of today’s Arria Formula meeting “is clearly to interfere in domestic affairs of a sovereign state, in flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law upon which the international legal order is founded.”
On the protests, he said, “Iranian law enforcement can prevent or manage any unrest and maintain complete trust, tranquillity across the country, but they will not do so at any cost. The importance of human life and dignity is what ultimately guide our decision. Therefore, the restraint displayed by Iranian law enforcement should not be a sign of weakness.”
Protests began in September following the death in custody last month of Mahsa Amini.
Arria formula meetings are informal unofficial consultations by members of the Security Council.
