3. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“I wanted to just say to you that the world of Burkina is a world of opportunity, as well as a world of tragedy, that there is an opportunity, I believe, we believe, our colleagues in the field, work closely with the new authorities, to make sure that we have the relationship with them of confidence and trust so that we can do our job, and so that the population of this country which is whose predicament has got so much worse this year can at least have some sort of international support.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“We have helped 740,000 people access health care, food aid, to 1.8 million nutritional supports to almost half a million children and expecting mothers. What has happened in the last year in Burkina is a huge increase in incidents of violence. No doubt this is part of the reason for the fact that we've had two coups that are within the year and the latest is a couple of weeks ago.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“We have an 800 million response plan for this year. We're now in October, getting on to the end of October, we are one third funded, so we have about $300 million. Again, largely the generosity of the United States of the European Union. And of course, we need more. This is a story we're seeing all over the world, to be one third funded this year, is very, very normal.”

STORYLINE:
UN humanitarian affairs chief and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said, “the world of Burkina is a world of opportunity, as well as a world of tragedy,” he believes that there is an opportunity to “work closely with the new authorities," to build confidence and trust so that “the population of this country which is whose predicament has got so much worse this year can at least have some sort of international support.”
In a press conference today (26 Oct) in New York, Martin Griffiths briefed reporters about his visit to Burkina Faso last week where he met the new leadership, got a better understanding of the humanitarian situation in the country.
He said that in September, a convoy of trucks was destroyed in attacks by armed groups. Since then, not a single truck has arrived. There were no goods in the market, and it has not been possible to grow much food in the area. The cattle were driven out. Mothers were forced to feed their children with leaves and salt.
By the time he visited Djibo, the leaves were also running out. The women told him that they go out at night, in the cover of darkness, to the villages nearby where they might still find leaves for their hungry and sick children. To do this, they break out of their encirclement and risk attacks, rape and death.
The Emergency Relief Coordinator relayed his message to Transitional President Traoré, saying that the roads need to be reopened so that humanitarians can move cargo by road without military escorts.
He said, “we have helped 740,000 people access health care, food aid, to 1.8 million nutritional supports to almost half a million children and expecting mothers.”
Griffiths continued, “what has happened in the last year in Burkina is a huge increase in incidents of violence. No doubt this is part of the reason for the fact that we've had two coups that are within the year and the latest is a couple of weeks ago.”
On funding shortage, the Emergency Coordinator said, “we have an 800 million response plan for this year. We're now in October, getting on to the end of October, we are one third funded, so we have about $300 million. Again, largely the generosity of the United States of the European Union.”
He reiterated that more funding is urgently needed.
