STORYLINE:

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today (22 Oct) spoke at Viet Nam’s Meteorological and Hydrological Administration about disaster preparedness and said the goal is to have early warning systems in all countries of the world within five years, “to end the tragedy of people dying, livelihoods being destroyed, because people did not know that tragedy was unfolding.”

During the second day of his visit to Viet Nam, Guterres visited the Temple of Literature, participated in a tree-planting ceremony at Viet Nam’s Academy of Diplomacy, and crossed the the Huc Bridge at the Ngoc Son Temple.

The Secretary-General held meetings with Viet Nam’s President, Nguyen Xuan Phuc; Prime Minister, Pham Minh Chinh; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bui Thanh Son; Minister of Resources and Environment, Tran Hong Ha and the Chairman of the National Assembly, Vuong Dinh Hue.

At the Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, he said, “when we have an early warning system, and we know that something terrible is coming, we have time to relocate people we have time to protect property.

Speaking about Viet Nam’s work to protect the Mekong Delta, Guterres said it is “vulnerable to two things: vulnerable to the sea level rise, and vulnerable to the reduction of water of the Mekong River.”
