STORYLINE:
On the last day of Secretary-General António Guterres' visit to India today (20 Oct), he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participated in the launch of the Lifestyles for the Environment initiative, which took place at the Statue of Unity, in Ekta Nagar, in Narmada.
The Secretary-General arrived Wednesday night in Kevadia and was received by Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Together with Modi and Jaishanka, he visited the 182-metre-tall statue of Indian statesman and independence activist Vallabhbhai Patel.
Guterres said, “overconsumption is at the root of the triple planetary emergency of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. We are using the equivalent of 1.6 Planet Earths to maintain our lifestyles. And that's great excess is compounded by great inequality. The combined greenhouse gas emissions of the richest 1 percent are more than twice the poorest 50 percent.”
After the event, Guterres headed to Modhera, the first solar village in India, with a population of about 6,400. He interacted with the community and saw first-hand the impact that solar power is having on them.
Speaking at the nearby Temple of the Sun, he said, “the origin of all energy that we have on Earth comes from the sun. Unfortunately, we have not been deserving these gifts. Unfortunately, in the last decades, we have been in war with nature. We have been destroying our planet.”
He said, “here where the temple of Sun was built 1000 years ago, there is a new temple of Sun, it’s based on solar energy. And the fact that solar energy is transforming the lives of the people of this village, making it more healthy, giving them more prosperity, but at the same time, contributing to rescue our planet from climate change that is still riding without control. “
The Secretary-General traveled to Viet Nam, where tomorrow, he will meet the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong and the State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. He will also take part in a ceremony to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Viet Nam’s membership to the UN.
