STORYLINE:
At least ten million children are suffering from the worst climate-induced drought the Horn of Africa has seen in 40 years. The number of drought-hit people without reliable access to safe water is rising fast.
Meanwhile, more than 1.8 million children across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia require urgent treatment for life-threatening severe acute malnutrition.
As of 14 October 2022, the current outlook in Kenya is the worst in the last 40 years, with a high likelihood of a fifth failed rainy season for October, November, and December expected to increase the number of people facing food insecurity from 3.5 million to 4.35 million.
SMART surveys conducted in June/July 2022 show a significantly deteriorating nutrition situation in Arid and Semi-Arid Land regions (ASAL), with almost 1 in every 2.4 children suffering from malnutrition in Turkana South, one of the most affected areas. 8,071 children (4,107 girls and 3,964 boys) were admitted for treatment of severe acute malnutrition and 168,067 primary caregivers of children received infant young child feeding counselling in target counties during the reporting period.
UNICEF is on the ground responding to the drought emergency by supporting countries in the region in the sectors of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), nutrition, education, child protection, among others.
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas visited Turkana County 17-19 October to meet people in communities affected by the drought and to witness firsthand UNICEF's efforts and their results.
