2. Wide shot, Security Council
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States of America:
“This is not a moment to stand on the sidelines. This is a moment to stand up for the UN Charter for its values for its principles and purposes. And if Russia chooses to shield itself from accountability, then we will take further steps in the General Assembly to send an unmistakable message to Moscow that the world is still on the side of defending sovereignty and protecting territorial integrity.
4. Close up, Security Council President
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United States of America:
“Earlier today we saw Putin celebrate this clear violation of international law. He threw a party on Red Square to pat himself on the back for these illegal referenda. He's gloating and reminiscing about the Soviet empire and stated that this was just the beginning. As we all sit in this chamber, and solemnly consider this resolution, Putin is instead boastfully shoving our shared values in our faces. It's time we stand up to defend our collective beliefs. Together.”
6. Med shot, Security Council
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, United Kingdom:
“Russia's annexations further jeopardize the prospects for peace, and they fundamentally undermine the purposes and the principles of the United Nations. The area Russia is claiming to annex is more than 90,000 square kilometers. This is the largest forcible annexation of territory since the Second World War.”
8. Close up, Permanent Representative from Ukraine
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“We are forced to note that some of our colleagues in the Council have reached a new low. Even the few vestiges of decorum that it seemed to still remain in this hall have been violated. I do not know of any other examples where the Security Council would have ever adopted resolutions that directly condemn one of the members of the Council. Tell me: do you seriously expect Russia to consider and support such a draft?”
10. Various shots, Council Members vote
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Sergiy Kyslytsya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ukraine:
“Putin’s envoy has followed in the footsteps of his master in Moscow, where a puppet show has been organized today in an attempt to deny the obvious: that the aggressive and adventurous regime in Russia is heading to its imminent defeat. I'm not going to elaborate on lies that have nothing in common with reality.”
12. Wide shot, Security Council
STORYLINE:
