3. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“I've seen UNRWA in action. I've been in schools. I've been in health centers. I mean, you can't imagine what it is to go to Gaza and, in the middle of that mess, to be a school that could be a school in my country. And to talk to students, and to listen to them talk about human rights, about tolerance, mutual understanding, peace.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“UNRWA is, I would say, the only factor in which the international community is corresponding to the needs of the Palestinian people. There is nothing else. I mean, to have half a million girls and boys in schools, to have 2 million people in health care, to have job opportunities for young people, to have support to families in distress, to provide a number of absolutely basic services for this population is an absolute must.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“One thing I can tell: UNRWA things work well, and they are not only effective, they are also cost effective. There are many things in the Un that are not as cost effective as UNRWA is. Please, from the bottom of my heart, don't let this collective responsibility assumed by the General Assembly to fail.”

STORYLINE:

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, urged Member States to support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), telling them “don't let this collective responsibility assumed by the General Assembly to fail.”

At a ministerial meeting today (22 Sep) for key partners in support of the agency at the sidelines of the General Assembly, Guterres said, “I've seen UNRWA in action.”

“I've been in schools. I've been in health centers. I mean, you can't imagine what it is to go to Gaza and, in the middle of that mess, to be a school that could be a school in my country. And to talk to students, and to listen to them talk about human rights, about tolerance, mutual understanding, peace,” recalled the UN chief.

Guterres continued saying that “UNRWA things work well, and they are not only effective, but they are also cost effective.”

According to him, “there are many things in the UN that are not as cost effective as UNRWA is.”

The Secretary-General said that the agency is “the only factor in which the international community is corresponding to the needs of the Palestinian people.”

“There is nothing else. I mean, to have half a million girls and boys in schools, to have 2 million people in health care, to have job opportunities for young people, to have support to families in distress, to provide a number of absolutely basic services for this population is an absolute must,” explained Guterres.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, said that “today was a very good day, on which foreign ministers and representatives of 40 countries and organizations sent a resounding message of support to UNRWA.”

According to Safadi, Member States showed “that the role the agency plays is indispensable and a commitment for support for the agency and for the great job it does providing vital services to millions of Palestinian refugees.”
