STORYLINE:

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today (22 Sep) said, “there is absolutely no doubt that today, we as a community of nations, collectively face the most challenging social, economic and environmental situation we have experienced in modern history.”

In his address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, Mohamud said “the situation is dire and potentially an existential, therefore without transformative and urgent implementable solutions to these interlocking challenges of our times, this small window of opportunity, we have to act together will pass to the detriment of all our citizens and the world.”

In Somalia, he said, “we are working tirelessly to transition from over two decades of devastating conflict, droughts, famine and developmental stagnation, to a new age of instability, progress and prosperity.” However, he added, “despite our continuing effort, Somalia and its resilient people are facing some of the most complex and interconnected crisis in the world.”

Mohamud said the Somali government “has called on all its business community, diaspora and international partners on all its business and international partners, to work with us to do everything possible to avert a possible, looming famine.”

He urged partners “to heed our call and work with us to provide immediate support and relief to the most affected communities.”

The number of people facing life-threatening levels of hunger worldwide without immediate humanitarian aid, is expected to rise steeply in coming weeks, the UN said on Wednesday (21 Sep), in a new alert about looming famine in the Horn of Africa and beyond.

In Somalia, hundreds of thousands are already facing starvation today with staggering levels of malnutrition expected among children under five, warned the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
