“As soon as the violence took place there was immediately a riverine patrol which was sent to the area, which I think, helped control the situation and also rescued some people who had nearly drowned in the river. And also, we could send a message that the UN force is here, which I’m sure helped in sort of stemming the violence. Whatever we do, we’re doing it together as one mission here – the Field Office, the Force, the Sector Headquarters, as well as the humanitarians. We’re trying to do things together to give confidence to all concerned.”

“I’m sure that all people concerned, all stakeholders have understood that violence is not the key for any purpose. I’m going back with the feeling that, yes, the situation was bad a few days ago but I’m sure it is becoming okay. We will soon find an amicable solution to the interests of various stakeholders and there will be peace.”

STORYLINE:
Since last month, conflict has displaced thousands in Upper Nile in South Sudan, leading to an influx of newly displaced persons at the UN Protection Site adjacent to the UNMISS base in Malakal. The UN Peacekeeping mission has strengthened its interventions to protect civilians, working with local authorities and humanitarian partners, despite the inclement weather and nearly inaccessible roads.
Against this complex backdrop, Force Commander Mohan Subramanian made his maiden visit to Malakal and Kodok.

“As soon as the violence took place, immediately there was a riverine patrol that was sent to the area, which I think, helped control the situation and also rescued some people who had fallen down in the river. And also, we could send a message that the UN force is here, which I’m sure helped in sort of stemming the violence. Whatever we do, we’re doing it together as one mission here – the Field Office, the Force, the Sector Headquarters, as well as the humanitarian actors. We’re trying to do things together to give confidence to all concerned.”
During his visit, Force Commander Subramanian met uniformed counterparts to learn about the challenges they face serving for peace in Upper Nile’s challenging terrain.

While innumerable lives have been marred by the recent outbreak of violence in Adidiyang, peacekeepers continue to do everything in their power and capacity to reduce tensions as well as restore calm and stability.
