3. SOUNDBITE (English) Moses Bagari, Child Protection Officer, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“During our patrols, when we come here, we don’t only patrol and go, but we see challenges. When we are able to see when we pass from here via Mundri to Mvolo, we see challenges in terms of children learning under trees. And therefore, we picked it up during this cycle that why can’t we put something in order for children to access quality education and be in a conducive learning environment. And as such, we put up this concept note, and it succeeded, and that is one of the fundamental rights of children to have access to education.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Jenty Elisa, Mvolo resident:

That said, UNMISS expects that the local community, along with hand in hand with county authorities, that they will make good use of this building [so] that when we come back for monitoring, we will find a good number of children in school.”

STORYLINE:
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) built a new school and Police post in Mvolo, Western Equatoria State.

Mvolo community, bordering Lakes State, suffered terribly during the crisis in South Sudan and continues to endure sporadic inter-communal tensions and cattle raids that have forced many to flee their homes and abandon their lands.

Life is slowly returning to normal with reduced tensions, but challenges such as education and healthcare remain.

Therefore, UNMISS built them schools to contribute to peacebuilding and encourage voluntary returns.

The local community joined construction efforts, with women carrying water to help build these necessary classrooms.

The UN Peacekeeping mission also built a police post to reduce criminality and boost the rule of law.

For UNMISS, these projects are about building durable peace for this and future generation.
