“Today, many people think that's only governments matter. But on the contrary, more and more the contribution of the civil society and the contribution of the academia are essential in the development of modern democracies. And this school has given very important contributions, namely to the Charter of the United Nations. One of the members was part of the drafting of the charter and its values were discussed here and also in research about the Holocaust and in contributions in relation to several very important aspects of the analysis of the violations of human rights and genocide. That is the reason why for me, as Secretary-General of the United Nations, it is a very important experience to be able to visit this faculty of Lviv university.”

STORYLINE:

Ahead of his meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymr Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, cradle of human rights law in Ukraine. He was received by its rector, Volodymyr Melnyk, who explained the University’s and its scholars’ important contributions to the world’s science, international law and diplomacy.

Speaking at the University, Guterres said that “today, many people think that's only governments matter.”

Despite that belief, the UN chief said, “more and more the contribution of the civil society and the contribution of the academia are essential in the development of modern democracies.”

“And this school has given very important contributions, namely to the Charter of the United Nations. One of the members was part of the drafting of the charter and its values were discussed here and also in research about the Holocaust and in contributions in relation to several very important aspects of the analysis of the violations of human rights and genocide”, Guterres said.

The Secretary-General will then go on to Odesa, where he will visit the port that is one of the three being used as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

Before returning to New York over the weekend, the Secretary-General will be in Istanbul to visit the Joint Coordination Centre set up to implement the initiative.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative specifically allows for significant volumes of commercial food exports from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea – Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny.

During the agreement signing ceremony in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 22 July, Guterres called the initiative “a beacon of hope” in a world that desperately needs it.
