Launching The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022, the Under-Secretary-General and head of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs said that “the world is facing a confluence of crises” that “are threatening the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the very survival of humanity.”

Launched on Thursday (07 July), the annual progress report provides a global overview of progress towards the SDGs based on the most recent data.

Speaking to journalists in New York, Liu Zhenmin noted that since the beginning of the pandemic “more than four years of progress eliminating poverty have been wiped out, pushing 93 million more people worldwide back into extreme poverty in 2020.”

Meanwhile, the Under-Secretary-General added, and estimated 147 million children missed more than half of their person instruction over the past two years.

On top of that, Zhenmin said that “the pandemic brought major disruptions to essential health services, triggered the and prevalence of anxiety and depression, lowered the global health life expectancy and derailed progress towards ending HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.”

Referring to what must be done to get the world back on track, Zhenmin said the international community “must start by ending conflicts and embarking on the path to diplomacy and peace as a precondition for sustainable development.”
