STORYLINE:
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet concluded a four-day official mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday. This is the first visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1998.
During her visit, the High Commissioner met with senior Government officials, representatives of civil society, survivors and families of victims of the 1992-95 conflict, members of the judiciary, and representatives of the international community.
Michelle Bachelet met with the chair of the Presidency, Sefik Dzaferovic, parliamentarians among others. She also met with civil society actors working on issues ranging from peacebuilding, transitional justice, anti-corruption, the rights of women, people with disabilities, LGBTI and migrants.
One of the most moving experiences during the four-day mission was her visit to the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial complex where some 8,000 men and boys fell victim to the crime of genocide.
The High Commissioner paid homage to the victims, survivors and families of those killed, and met with a mother who shared her story of losing her husband and 16-year-old son. Her husband’s body was recovered from a mass grave, but her young son is still missing.
Emina, the mother told Michelle Bachelet that every single day is painful, but she will never give up hope of one day finding his body and finally laying him to rest next to his father. She spoke of the determination of the Srebrenica mothers to continue their fight to ensure the genocide will never be forgotten. “without my son, I still hope to find his remains, to be able to bury him, each day is difficult for me, but the 11th of July is the most difficult” said Emina.

“Let’s to everything to ensure peace, so things like this will never happen again. Let’s learn the lessons of what has happened. Let's ensure peace,” she said.
Today, some 7,600 people who were disappeared during the war are still unaccounted for as a result of the extensive crimes committed across the country.
Some of the main architects responsible for the war crimes, and the genocide, have been tried and now face the rest of their lives in a jail cell. But there are others who committed war atrocities, including crimes of sexual violence, who still go unpunished and are walking free in Bosnia and Herzegovina or other countries. The High Commissioner’s hope is that justice will be served on them too.
