STORYLINE:
The Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, convened an Emergency Committee under Article 48 of the International Health Regulations about the current outbreak of the monkeypox virus.

The meeting is taking place today (23 Jun) and is open only to members and advisors of the Emergency Committee.

The objectives of this meeting are to provide views to the Director-General of WHO on whether the event constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

If so, it will propose Temporary Recommendations on better preventing and reducing the spread of the disease and managing the global public health response.
