STORYLINE:

Speaking at the Multi-Hazard Early Warning Conference in Bali, Indonesia, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Monday (23 May) said, “we need to do more, especially for the most vulnerable, to incorporate disaster risk in how we live, build, and invest.”

Mohammed urged all those present from Government, the private sector, international organizations, and civil society to scale up efforts to reach global coverage of early warning systems within the next five years.

She said, “a people-centred early warning system, combined with early action, saves lives and empowers individuals and communities to act in a timely and appropriate manner,” adding, “this approach reduces the likelihood of loss of lives, personal injury and illness and damage to property, assets and the environment.”

In Tanjung Benoa Village, Bali Province, the Deputy Secretary-General witnessed a tsunami drill exercise in a local school, with Major General TNI Suharyanto, Head of Indonesia National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB).

The site is one of three schools where students are trained for earthquake / tsunami evacuation from the school to a higher-floor in a safer building, under a UNDP-supported project funded by the Government of Japan. In this low-lying area, hotels with three or more floors have signed a memorandum of understanding and have been designated as vertical evacuation centres.

On Wednesday, Amina Mohammed will address the opening session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, an international forum that brings together governments, the UN system, and key players to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments and trends in reducing disaster risk.

The 2022 Global Platform will provide a unique and timely opportunity to showcase the importance of international solidarity and cooperation, as well as to discuss ways to tackle underlying risk drivers both locally and globally.
