Today is World Press Freedom Day. The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, took part in a high-level dialogue on Press Freedom and the UN Plan of Action on Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. The event was organized by UNESCO and the Government of Uruguay.

Tomorrow, President Shahid will take part in the New York observance of the Day. Tomorrow’s event is organized by UNESCO and the Department of Global Communications. It is entitled “Journalism Under Digital Siege.” The President will take part virtually.

Tomorrow is also the high-level thematic debate on tourism. The theme is “Putting sustainable and resilient tourism at the heart of an inclusive recovery.”

In terms of who else the President is meeting with today… This morning, President Shahid had a bilateral meeting with a delegation of the European Union. The President met with 28 Ambassadors of the EU Political and Security Committee. The President is also meeting with the Co-Chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly. Those are Ambassador Mitch Fifield, the Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations, and Ambassador Egriselda Lopez, the Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations.

The President also had a courtesy call with Ambassador Jakub Kulhanek, Permanent Representative of Czech Republic.
