During the tête-a-tête meeting, the Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations’ position on Ukraine, and they discussed the proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians from conflict zones, namely in relation to the situation in Mariupol. STORYLINE:

Following a tête-a-tête meeting between Secretary-General António Guterres and President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation Tuesday (26 Apr), spokesperson Farhan Haq today (27 Apr) said “our Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is mobilising a team on behalf of the UN system to coordinate the evacuation of civilians in the Azovstal plant in Mariupol and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is also involved in the coordination efforts.”

During the meeting, Haq said, the Secretary-General “reiterated the United Nations’ position on Ukraine, and they discussed the proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians from conflict zones, namely in relation to the situation in Mariupol.”

President Putin, he said, “agreed, in principle, to the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee for the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.”
